An editorial born from the gathering of textures, feelings and materials. Summoning friends to create an entity that inhabits all of us. Obsessed with the occult and ritual, the aesthetic stemmed from Harpies, A Greek mythological hybrid animal-human that was mostly feared. The Summoning of our very own Harpy using our own vessels in ritual.
Pieces featured (not including the white look) are a part of Gyreslip’s graduate work - an investigation into a “becoming” animal - what exists between the historical, beautiful body and the consumable, inanimate flesh.
What can we discover or disrupt when our bodies are driven by animalistic physical impulse?
Existing in the in-between creates a confusion of boundaries, contesting traditional notions of the body and its relationship to the world. We summon the primal entity within us.
The ceramic pieces by SlipCity included in ‘The Summoning’ are part of a larger body of work, where symbols are reflected in the form of the ceramic objects. Each piece stands as concepts; tools to navigate and check into, to assist us with the situations that arise in our journey. The objects represent what we may need, and what we must let go of. The sword, ‘Essence Armour’ is a symbol of protection, but must be used wisely during times of conflict; the lock, ‘Past the Sleeping Guards’ is a symbol for parts of ourselves we are yet to unlock; The bag ‘Check In’ is a vessel of what we choose to carry closely, sometimes we may have extra baggage that no longer serves us.
